Pathogens and periodontal disease

At Smiles by Shields, we’re focused on periodontal disease prevention. Regular cleanings and daily brushing and flossing can prevent the development of periodontial disease. Even though it’s preventable, the World Health Organization estimates that around 60 percent of all adults suffer from gum inflammation.

Periodontal disease doesn’t impact only the teeth and gums; associated illnesses include cardiopulmonary disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Evidence shows that the affected patient has an elevated risk of cardiovascular constriction, as well as Alzheimer’s.

Because periodontal disease is so dangerous, researchers have been working to target the pathogens present in the mouth that do the most damage. One treatment was successful in thwarting 95% of Porphyromonas gingivalis pathogen grown in lab conditions. While treatments are in development, the best course of action for you is to prevent periodontal disease by seeing us for regularly scheduled exams and prophylaxis!
